Let's Go Party!
Americans are very fond of parties. Once they get the opportunity, they would get together to enjoy their parties. We are quite familiar with those parties such as a dinner party、 a birthday party、Christmas party, and so on. But there are some parties which might be strange to us.
Stag party
“Stag” in English means “a grown male deer”. Here it means “man”. So the party is only for male, female are not welcome. At parties, men usually do some “female things”. They drink alcohol、play cards and watch boxing or soccer. And often they hold this party on the evening before the bridegroom’s wedding. At that time it is called “bachelor party”, which would be much crazier. They tell tales and usually they would play and drink all the night. And often women and sex are involved. But if you hold such a party in China, maybe the police would like to have a business with you.
Hen party
There are “stage parties”, so there must be “hen parties”. “Hen” off course, you know the meaning. But here, in slang, it means “female”. Hen parties are only for female. Not like a stag party, a hen party is much quiet. Women just sit together and have some coffee and snacks. Talk is their main business. As is known to all that women like talking is quite the same around the world, so it would be quite welcome in China.
Tailgate party
Compared with stag party and hen party, tailgate party does not have the limitation. No matter who you are, female or male, young or old, you have the right to take part in it. I would like to tell you something about the source of tailgate party. Tailgate is part of a certain car, which is placed at the back. We all know that Americans are keen on soccer. They are crazy with almost any matches. At the very beginning, it was the funs that first used the tailgate as a table to have their picnic before the match. Then people found it was very convenient and “efficient” so they began to copy them, and “tailgate party” was born. It became very popular in the States. And now it changes a little, natives are tend to call any kind of parties that held before soccer matches “tailgate parties”. It is a very typical American life style, so if you have the chance to visit the US, don’t forget to have a try!
Costume Party
Costume parties can be great fun. People are less inhibitive when their identities are concealed. These parties may even have a specific theme, such as 'gangster' or 'school party'. Besides the fact that everyone looks like a freak, a costume party is exactly the same as a regular shindig. People drink and chat and dance. In Britain costume parties are known as fancy dress parties. Be careful! To Americans, fancy dress party refers to a formal black tie event. If an American invites you to a fancy dress party, don't turn up dressed as Cleopatra.
