People in the community on the pasific coast in southern Califalia are work last week to a sea of dead fish. He remember that about five years ago. There was another serious kill of fish in Keyhubber. It was caused by a harmful algage bloom. A so called red tied of microscopic organazism that spread from time to time. But this time, scientics found no toex algage in Keyhubber. So it was a mystery.
On Friday, a scientics at the university of southern Califalia released findings of continue research in his lab. Professor David Karon said fish collected on March 8 the day of the kill tested strongly positive for demoic acid in the stomach contents. Demoic acid is a powerful ..produced by one kind of micro algage.
Fishes such as sudins and alchive can get posient when they eat planten that have the algage.
Researchers from USC confirmed that plankton collected about twenty kilometers southwest of xx the next day had very high levels of demoic acid. This would support a theory that the fish became poisoned in coastal waters before entering the harbor.
High levels of demoic acid in the sardines may have worsened the effects of oxygen loss in the water as the fish crowded into a limited space. Or the demoic acid may help explain why they entered the murina. Professor Caron said research shows that demoic acid poisoning can cause abnormal swimming in some kinds of fish.
