Snow brings part of South Yorkshire to a standstill
Sheffield was one of the worst-affected areas in South Yorkshire
Heavy snow has caused major disruption to South Yorkshire, bringing parts of the county to a standstill.
About 500 schools are shut and bus services have been suspended in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster.
Sheffield City Council said its full council meeting had been cancelled because of the inclement weather.
Flights at Robin Hood Airport have been suspended, many roads are closed and South Yorkshire Police are urging people not to drive.
Wedding cancelled
Hospitals are advising patients not to attend unless it is urgent, and are asking off-duty medical staff to make their way into work if they can.
Barnsley Hospital has closed its outpatients departments and cancelled non-urgent operations.
Sheffield council said it believed it was the first time ever that a full council meeting had been cancelled because of the weather.
Some train services between Sheffield and Leeds have been delayed and cancelled, and bus operator First said on Wednesday it had decided to stop all of its services due to the "serious and unsafe condition" of many roads.
Sheffield Supertram said it had also suspended services between Cathedral and Herdings Park due to the adverse weather conditions.
On the roads, the A57 Snake Pass and the A628 Woodhead Pass were both closed and driving conditions were said to be "difficult" on the M62.
Tracy Gell was supposed to get married at Sheffield Town Hall on Wednesday, but has decided to cancel her wedding because of the snow.
Tonnes of salt
She told BBC News: "Looking at the weather outside I wouldn't have been able to wear my dress, so I know it's for the best."
She added: "I could have coped with a quick covering, but not this. [It's] absolutely horrendous."
South Yorkshire Police said they had 4x4 vehicles out trying to clear roads.
Sheffield council said it had used 4,000 tonnes of salt in November alone on the city's roads - an unprecedented amount for the time of year.
