The Obama administration last week annouced a plan to protect intetnet users in the US. The administration has proposed what is calls a consumer privacy bilerve rights.
The bill is made to give Ameicans more control over their personal information. President Obama said last Sursday that never has privacy been more important than today. In the age of intetnet, the worldwide web and smartphones.
Under the privacy bilerve rights, Americans would have more control over what personal data companies collect from them and how they use it. It also would require the companies to be more open about their privacy and sercurity policies.
Deron Hees is head of the computer information systems program at Pees university in Newyork. He says many countris in Europe and Asia already have online privacy laws in place. "I think that this legislation is to see long of do, I think that in the president form, it looks very effective. And I think that it is estab the right direction and you ever ..user does need more transpency and more control over the use of their information."
Proffessor Hees says the consumer privacy biliver rights holds companies like Facebook and Google to a higher level of responsibility. "I think impact to go terms, it's going to make online companies more contable for what they do. And it also seek to provide more transpenrency and but how their parties are share their information. And give the user hofully it biliship to ..of having their information shared. "
The new measures are part of a larger goverment effort to improve online privacy. The administration has urged congress to pass federal legislation in support of the measures. It also wants law makers to give the federal trade commition and state aternies general, additional powers to enforce the measures.
Proffessor Hees says the effectivenees of the bill will depend strong lay on that. "What's also going to important the ban of legislation are the panaltive and finds will all to but they be imposed for none complize."
Also last week, a group of internet browser companies agreed to support plans for adding do not track technology to their web browsers. The group agreed not to use tracking information to target personalized adds to users who do not wish to be identified.
The companies will however still collect the information.
