The crisis at the damaged xx nuclear power station in northern Japan has raised worries about radiation risks. We spoke Tursday with Jason Links, a expert in radiation health science. He is a proffessor at the xx school of public health in Maroland. Proffessor Links says workers within the nuclear plant are the only people at risk can vicstrainly high doses of radiation. "Of course, we don't know what those ..but the only persons at risk of a curety radiations effect are the workers." For other people, he says there are maybe a long term worry. People can get concern from low doses of imazing radiation, the kind released in the nuclear accident. Proffessor Links says scientics can use computers to quickly model where radio active material has blew and settled. Then they measure how large area is contemnated. He says if the situation is serious enough officals could take steps like telling people not to eat locally grown food or drink the water. "But that would only be the case, if there was a significant release, and because of wind direction, the radio active material was blow over the area and they settle out of the area into and onto water, plants and fruits and vegetables."
The reactors of xx are on the pasific coast. But proffessor Links says people should not worry about any radio active material leaking into the ocean. " But even through the worst case in the area accident is seen provide a very high degree of dilution and so the ..tration of the radio activity in the sea water would be still be quite low."
Japan is the only country to have had a tomic bombs droped on it. That memory from world war two would creat a stronger .. sensitivity to radiation exposure, proffessor Links says.
Next month is the 25th enovisiry of the exposure and fire that destroy the reactor at xx in Newclone. The 1996 event was the world's worst accident in the nuclear power industry. A new United nations report says more than 6000 cases of firel cancer have been found. These are in people who were children in the affected areas of xx, Rasian and Newclone. The report says that by 2005, the cancers had resulted in 15 death. The cancers were largely caused by drinking contemnated milk. The milk came from cows that eat grass where radio material had fallen.
