This is the VOA special english education report.
Last week, we told you about prison training program in the American Northwest. It teaches women in prison to start their own bussinesses after their release. Today, we tell you about one of the few prisons in America that offer college level classes, San Qutein Prison in Califania.
Judy Lone volunteer to teaching the college at San Qutein in 1999. She was a graduated student. The program has small group volunteers and no money. A year later, the director resigned. Miss.Lone agree to run the program until a perminate director could be found. "The one sign started doing the work and gotten really more deap involved. They also began to receive the potential that program had and start to think more and more that what the program could be come, and people can serve and .. address."
The prison university project has expanded under Miss.Loan's leadship. The goal is to prepare men to lead thoughtful and productive life inside and outside of prison.
20 classes are offered each semaster. Classes this spring included english, math, US history and Washing and Sovie history. Other classes included Asian American threater, Spanish, biology, sociology, ferlasify and criminal justics.
300 mates take class every semater. They earn credits toward a socioed arts degree in lebral arts from Pattern university in Opliland Califania.
Miss.Loan says getting teachers to volunteer is not difficult, but some are nervous about their first trip to San Qutein. "You know all of ...trouble makers and ...."
She has recoded more than 150 volunteers including graduated students from colleges and universities in the area. Charles Bens hopes to earn prove from prison one day. He needs few more classes to received his associate's degree and he wants to earn a mater's degree in San college. "This is ..really changed my life. It's give me a lot tools to ..express myself. This is forgen ..where in the prison setting so  ..lucky have oppertunity to get education especially with the way the economy are out of .. They ..This access give us a lot of hope and help us how to succeed when you work out of the door."
More and than, 100 prisoners have reveived an assoiated degree. Many more have continued their college studies after their release. The project reveives no state of federal money. It operates with donations from people and fundations.
Judy Loan once to make a free college education available to more of the 5500 mates at San Qutein. There is a long waiting list of prisoners who want take classes.
